I’ve been wrapping up the Orao WiFi modem project so tonight I put together a short demo that includes loading the terminal emulator from tape, running it in wifi modem mode and connecting to a login screen on a telnet enabled BBS.

It’s been suggested that they were actually referring to the Russian Iskra computers, though it’s not super clear https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iskra-1030

Big issue was the hardware that Iskra Delta was producing under license from DEC at the time. There’s very little about this available in English, but I’ve got some references in my HOPE talk about this https://twitter.com/mejs/status/1551644931701280768?t=-96qmZw9mqrXVBXxFzP89A&s=19

PRC contracted Iskra Delta from Yugoslavia to build a computer network between its largest cities, including all the network hardware, computers and support. They got this job due to US embargo on exporting such tech to China at the time.

I talk about the Partner and other Iskra Delta computers in my HOPE talk, but the more interesting thing is how Yugoslavia sold its IT products to countries that didn’t have access to Western technology https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18BKW9ugjQM

Iskra Delta mentioned in Adam Curtis’s new doc Russia 1985-1999: Traumazone. Iskra workstations are used in the Intensification 90 campaign attempting to automate Leningrad’s economy.

Access to good quality bike repair is an issue for many communities, but budget bikes are a trap, not just for the environment but also for folks who can’t afford more expensive bikes https://nyc.streetsblog.org/2021/03/24/opinion-how-the-budget-bike-trap-creates-inequality-in-nyc/ https://twitter.com/Pflax1/status/1583974315480883200
